In 2009, the Red River of the North rose to historic flood levels. The untamable Red crested at 40.82 feet, 22.82 feet above flood stage, overone foot higher than the record 1997 flood, and over 0.7 feet above the all time record set in the 1890s. Shortly after thatrecord crest, residents of the Red River Valley were shocked with the news of yet another record crest, potentially 41-43 feet. Preparations took place to protect the region to these river heights. The Red surprised everyone by only reach 34 feet, a surprise that pleased all those that were planning for the worst. Congratulations Moorhead and a BIG thank you to the thousands of volunteers that helped Moorhead hold back an epic flood!
