MRES Announces Scholarships for Graduating High School Seniors

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) and its 61 local public power utilities are pleased to announce that scholarship applications are now being accepted for college-bound high schoolers and those seeking to attend a powerline/lineworker technical college. Twelve $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually to help offset the cost of higher education.

Graduating high school seniors whose families are customers of MRES member municipal electric systems are eligible for one of five MRES $1,000 scholarships awarded annually and renewable up to three additional years.

Applicants must reside in a household receiving electric service from one of the 61 MRES member utilities. In addition, eligible high school seniors must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school no later than the fall of 2021.

Scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing courses of study for careers related to the electric industry, such as an electrical technician (field service technician, wind turbine maintenance, power plant maintenance, etc.), electrical engineer or other engineering disciplines, mathematics, science, energy management, or other closely related fields.

In addition, up to seven scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to students who enroll in a powerline/lineworker program at an eligible technical college no later than the fall of 2021.

Eligible technical colleges include the following:

  • Bismarck State College, Bismarck, N.D.
  • Dakota County Technical College, Rosemount, Minn.
  • Minnesota West Community and Technical College, Granite Falls, Minn.
  • Minnesota West Community and Technical College, Jackson, Minn.
  • Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Wadena, Minn.
  • Mitchell Technical Institute-Mitchell, S.D
  • Northwest Iowa Community and Technical College-Sheldon, Iowa

Powerline/lineworker scholarships are one-time only and not renewable. Applicants do not need to reside in a household receiving electric service from an MRES member utility.

Students can apply by going to www.mrenergy.com. The deadline to submit an application is by 3 p.m. CT on March 15, 2021.

Moorhead Public Service is committed to supporting and investing in the students in our community, who will be the leaders of tomorrow,” says General Manager Travis Schmidt. “These scholarships are even more important this year because some of our applicants may have experienced financial challenges due to COVID-19.”

MRES is an organization of 61 member municipalities in the states of Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Each member owns and operates a municipal electric utility. MRES provides its members with energy and a wide range of energy-related services.
