PRESS RELEASE: Moorhead Public Service is seeking residents to serve on the Moorhead Public Service Commission

For Immediate Release on Wednesday, January 8, 2020

Moorhead Public Service is seeking residents that reside in Ward 3 and Ward 4 that would be interested in serving on the Moorhead Public Service Commission (Commission). The Commission is responsible for the control, management and operation of the water utility plant and transmission and distribution systems, the electric utility plant and transmission and distribution systems, and establishes water and electric rates for consumers. Commission meetings are conducted bi-monthly.

Moorhead Public Service (MPS) is a consumer-owned electric and water utility, serving more than 21,000 customers within a community of over 43,000. MPS is proud to provide electricity and water to the businesses and residents within the city limits of Moorhead, MN. As a community-owned utility, MPS strives to be recognized as a regional leader by providing innovative, efficient, reliable and high-quality municipal services in a manner which maximizes current and future stakeholder satisfaction. MPS receives no tax dollars. Instead, over $9 million in utility revenues are transferred each year to the City of Moorhead's general, capital improvement, and economic development funds.

The Commission is comprised of customer-owners who govern the utility. The Commission consists of five commissioners, each appointed for a term of three years, with a maximum of four terms. A commissioner must be a resident of the city. Four of the commissioners must be a resident in one of the four wards in the city; and must represent their specific ward on the commission. The fifth commissioner must be a resident in one of the four wards, and is appointed at large by the mayor of Moorhead. Those appointed by the city council are compensated for their time while serving as a Commissioner.

As a ratepayer and taxpayer, this would be a first-rate opportunity as a resident of Moorhead to participate, provide input, and gain knowledge in understanding the process for “keeping the power on” and providing “safe drinking water”.

MPS encourages residents residing in Ward 3 and Ward 4 to complete the Application for Appointment Form at http://www.cityofmoorhead.com/government/boards-commissions or contact the following City Council Representatives to express your interest in serving on the Commission:
