Wind Turbine Off-Line for Maintenance and Repair

Moorhead Public Service’s (MPS’) Wind Turbine Generator #8, Zephyr, was taken  off‑line in January 2013 due to a gearbox failure. Since that time, MPS has been working to acquire a replacement gearbox through a formal bidding process. MPS expected the gearbox to be installed in May 2013, but due to the extended winter and large amount of rain received in this area, MPS will be delaying the replacement of the gearbox until ground conditions allow a crane on‑site. The wind turbine gearbox should be repaired and returned to service in late June or early July 2013.

MPS currently generates wind energy with two wind turbines owned and operated by MPS—both located in north Moorhead, Minnesota.

MPS is a community-owned utility serving the residents of Moorhead, Minnesota, with electricity and water.
